Broken Soup week 5: Creative connector

I have chosen to talk about he scene in the elevator in the hospital. When Ro is on her way home from a visit to her mother she gets contact with a family with a mother and two teenagers.  They all look devastated with the dead is painted in their eyes and the sadness coloured in their posture. In some way they manages to respond Ro with a smile. In the book the following line gives me a connection to my own life "I smiled back and I thought how incredible that was, that they would find the time to smile. There was goodness in the world still, even if you couldn’t always see it."

The same thought has run through my head when I’ve been at the bus heading somewhere. Every one on the bus is stressed out and tired without any time for a decent chat, but a smile can do so much. I remember one ride when a women sat down in front of me. She was to tired to know where she was looking but in some sort of way her eyes alway glided back at me, even though she only stared into the emptiness. When she released she had been looking inappropriately long at a 15 years younger girl she giggled and so did I. This, because she found the time to smile in the middle of the stress. The darkness haven't got the hand over the goodness in people.

My connection between Broken soup and my own life is that you sometimes find someone who have experience the same thing as you. You understand each other and therefor you create a special bond. Solidarity, symphaty and fellowship bring us closer together in the most unexpected situation where you think things as those couldn’t exist. There is goodness in the world, even if you can’t always see it.

Broken Soup week 4: Word finder

I chose a couple of sentences which I thought was important to understand the message of the scene or the deeper meaning in the book. Some of them are also English  expressions. The same thing would have been expressed with different words in Swedish and therefor I thought if would be god the know these. I will also ask the group to connect the sentence with a scene in the book, to understand when it could be used.

-maybe someone else’s answer would have had more icing on, but I gave it to her pretty straight.
-she had a point
-you’re doing my head in
-she hadn’t paid the slightest bit of attention
-the paper was weighed down with stickers
-he would have laughed about it, stick two fingers down his throat.
-he let out a big long sigh
-get on with the day
-checking up
-the room has to be dismantled
-she tested it for holes and found it watertight
-we could be crumbs in a giant’s pocket
-frighteningly good at lying
-her face started to cave in
-running a family

Second, the people in my book circle, are going to explain the following words to each other without mention the word. This practices the ability to make you self understandable even if you haven't got he right word, but also your vocabulary.

piggyback
pile
melt
insane
buried
admire
giggle
grinning
peel
shoelace
retreating
sniffing
rinse
smear
quid

Broken Soup Week 3: Summarizer

Rowan and Stroma spend increasingly time with Bee or Harper, witch gives Rowan a break from all the duties back at the house. One day when they hang out in Bee’s flat, Rowan explores Bee’s room. Without snooping she finds a postcard in on of Bee’s books, identical to the one she got from Jack during his trip in France some days before he died. After many considerations with Harper she decides to confront Bee outside the shop. When Harper sees Bee he notices her bag, a similar one as the girl who dropped the negative wore. Harper immediately relies that he has handed the dropped negative to the wrong girl, since Rowan doesn’t own a bag like that. The photo belonged to Bee. While confronting her about the postcard and the negative, Rowan gets to know a new side of Jack; he was a romantic guy who dated Bee.

Broken Soup week 2: Character tracer

This week, my task was to analyze a character from the book Broken Soup. I chose Stroma, the 6-years old little sister of the main character Rowan. You only see Stroma through the eyes of Rowan, and the picture that are given to us isn't really fair. In my opinion Stroma is way stronger that Rowan sees and treats her. On pages 26 you can see a hint of Stroma’s knowledge of Rowan's thoughts and worries about their mother. Rowan goes to the shop to buy the food that her mother, in depression and chock from the lost of her son, is not available to buy, and she figures out that the sheering chat from Stroma isn't her sister's reaction of the brother's death; it's her way of taking care of Rowan. While Rowan is all upset and tired, Stroma tries to get her mind on other things by talking about spaghetti and chocolate biscuits.

That's the first spot were you can see an adult side of Stroma. Even if she is far to young to worry about grown-up problems, like supporting her family or economic problems, she does, in her own way. Instead of complaining about a bad bed-time story, she laughs and says it was good. I think Stroma is a very caring person. She sees Rowan’s pain and tries to fix it by not putting down even more problems for her.

You can see even more of Stroma’s generosity on p. 99, where she tries to make breakfast for Rowan and worries about their father. A sentence on the same page, shows us that Rowan still sees her sister like a little girl. Rowan is caring her up the stairs thinking Stroma is heavier that she expected. That’s not just because Stroma is sad, it’s because Stroma is older that Rowan sees her since Stroma is acting like a mature girl without criticizes her parents passivity.

To sum up you can say Stroma is a happy but responding sister who is always available for Rowan and never a burden.

Broken Soup week 1: Discussion Leader

p. 23: Rowan is sitting on the floor in her brother's room looing at the negative.
Why do you think Rowan sat dow in her brother's room when she had gotten the negative?

P. 54. Rowan decides to visit the adress that the boy from the waiting room gave her.
Would you have liked to meet the boy who gave Rowan the negativ if you were in her position, and would you meet him at his place?

p. 14 What do you think of her Brother Jack?

Lucia

In the darkest times of December a white dressed girl glides through the cold carrying a crown of candles followed by several girls and boys dressed in white. She brings warmth and joy and lights up hearts. The date is the 13th and the snow has landed like a powder over the Swedish shore. In the early morning a song about the greatness of Lucia breaks the silence and fill the bedrooms, churches and streets. Everywhere there is a celebration of Lucia, the saint who showed mercy upon the poor once in Sicily. But the Swedish tradition tells another story of the celebration. The 13th of December was a special night even before the tale of Lucia was told in the North. The darkness was the most compact and the night was the longest of the year. The people believed in Lussi, an evil demon who would kidnap you if you hadn’t behave or hadn’t prepared the Christmas celebration. On this special night, the people also believed in the ability of speaking animals. This night was cursed and therefor more light to frighten the darkness was needed. Because of that a woman of light should spread joy in the houses. In other parts of Sweden the celebration had it’s roots in the collecting of money for the cathedral schools. Pupils went from houses to houses singing the song of happiness and mercy.

Silver sparkling ropes are wrapped around the girls waist and in there hands a smaller candle is burning. According to the Italian celebration of Lucia, Lucia was killed in a bonfire made by the soldiers who didn’t approve of the donation she made for the poor. The red band around Lucia’s waist symbolised this fire. Songs are filling the air and bring strength to carry on until Christmas. Northern tradition is now formed to be a start of the Christmas celebration and Advent. Advent it selves is a countdown for Christmas and a time for reflection of the happiness you've experienced during the year. The new year of the church begins on the first of advent. Lucia’s and the choir’s songs bring strength to carry on until Christmas through the midwinter.

The Tempst

When the two brothers, Prospero and Antonio, ended up in a fight, Prospero and his daughter had to escape to a lonely island which was coursed by a spell from the evil witch Sycroax.
By the power of magic Prospero sets a spirit of the air free from a captivity of the witch. The spirit and the witch’s son were now living under the command of Prospero.

After twelve years on the island with his daughter he induces a storm on the sea which would make the ship of his a foe, his brother, split. During the commotion of the storm Antonio lost sight of his son Ferdinand and the crew seek for him on the island. Prospero made the spirit of air, Ariel, follow Antonio and his crew as they explored the island and she did everything in her power to make them frighten and scared.
Ferdinand on the other hand met Miranda, Prosperos daughter, and they fell head over heels in love. Later on Prospero felt responsible for the miserable he had cost his brother and he reunite Antonio and Fernando. Prospero used his magical power for the last time to rebuild Antonio’s broken ship so they all could celebrate the marriage of Ferdinand and Miranda. They sailed for Neapel, but left the witch’s son and Ariel on the island who now wasn’t under the command of Prospero. During the trip to Neapel he droped his magical books and left his magical powers in the ocean.

Loveproblem!

I’ve got something to confess: I’m in love. It’s not a big deal because I’m afraid that it wont work out. Even if I like him a lot, I know that I’m to shy to take the first step and he will never notice me. He’s perfect but too popular so he’s never alone. Seriously, I don’t know how to think about this. Is it better to say something, maybe weird thing, but he’ll at least remember me, or shall I just stay quiet without he getting any bad thought about me? Be crazy or be forgotten?
From what I’ve heard you and your last boyfriend were really close friends before you went from friendszone to lovezone, right? Do I have to know him well before we make out? I know I’m usually the one who doesn’t want to talk about love and boyfriends. Therefor you haven’t shared anything from your relationships with me, but now I’m ready to talk about it and I really need your help. I’m afraid that someone will ask him out before I get to a conclusion about this. How did you ask your boyfriend out? His simle is the only thing I can think of!

Stonecold- article

In the calm quarter around Nine Mornington Place the commotion has been maximum the last few days. Police cars, doctors, journalists, curious Londoners, and most of all, dossers have been seen around there. The streets has been filled by stinking dossers in worn clothes. Around the place of crime there has been well payed workers to beg from in the quarter and that’s the reason all the dossers has been gathered around the flat. You might think they have no guts at all to show up at these circumstances but the truth is that they have no chose. The poor ones have only seen fuss as an opportunity to earn some coppers.

The seven corpses that was found in a former soldiers basement was identified as dossers from London. The lack of family members did the progress for the police very difficult since no one was missing the dossers. When I asked a police man who sent in the tips of the flat he wouldn’t tell me, but I could tell he didn’t know. So I thought I would find out my self The unknown shouldn’t be to hard to find. I started looking for this hero. In my mind I pictured a handsome man in his early 40‘s with a black coat and shiny boots. But there was no hero like that to be found. I later found the real hero being much more interesting then a happy worries less man.

The man, or shall I say boy, who send the cops to the flat was paralyzed of fear when he was caught by me and my photographer on a pizzeria in the ruff parts of London just an hour after the police arrived to the flat. We asked him why he left so quickly but he answered that he didn’t want any interview, and any less any pictures to be taken. Later on he became a little more relaxed and I read him like a book. Believe it or not, he was as poor and homeless as the queen is rich. He was a dosser, just like the one that was found dead in the flat. From the judge of his face there was more burdens then being homeless. He went to the flat were the corps was found to look for his lost friend how had vanished some weeks before. To his dismay his friend was found dead in the basement of the flat of crime.

The strange happenings in the flat in Nine Mornington Place weren’t enough to make the Londoners open there eyes to the poor and miserable ones. Still people are passing by the homeless on the streets without a notice. I cannot more then wonder in which direction England is going if we are starting to kill each other for their miserably. In my opinion it isn’t the homeless fault their are being homeless and poor. They are just a concrete result of the society’s way of ignoring some problems and shut some people out. Next time you pass a dosser in worn clothes on the street don’t look away. Meet his eyes. They are the victims and they need help instead of week people who doesn’t stand up for them. A job, or at least some coppers, would fit them better.

And you out there who think the homeless only buy drugs for the money you donate  you are probably right. They just don’t get enough money to keep the hunger away, something the drugs is pretty god at.

Work experience: Daycare

During my days at the daycare I helped the children. Every morning I was met by smiling kids when I opened the door to the house. Even if I became tired and exhausted the work experience was very healthy because I learn what it is like to work. Now I can really imagine how hard it must be for all the adults that works eighth hours a day, and I only worked six hours for nine days.

This work would be excellent to have after the gymnasium. The daycare teachers even told me that I could come and be a substitute when I become older. They thought I had a very good hand for the children and that they wouldn’t think a second before they hired me. I feels great to know that I’m good at this sort of work, when you work with people, because in the future I hope I will have the change to choose a work that involves other persons. I wouldn’t stand to have a work where all I did was to work on my own. The work must be so much funnier if your work in a team.

The first four days I helped out with the smaller children, about two years old. Those days were the funniest and the best days of my work experience. I red many book and I sang many songs, like ”twinkle twinkle” and ”ladybug fly away”. When they were supposed to get out in the garden they needed help to dress up. The cold weather made it hard and warm in the hall but he children were happy and the weather couldn’t bring them down. Because of them I didn’t feel stressed.

The following five days I took care of children in the ages 3 to 6 years old. When these children were out a the garden I was playing with them. I still tried to not do too many things with them, because I was there to see how the teachers worked and not to play like a child. I tried to helped them instead of doing things for children.

When the nine days at the daycare were over it felt so nice to have the weekend for free. Never before had two days from school felt so important. After this work experience at the daycare I won’t look so easily on works that involves children. They made me tired but they also made my day with their jokes and smiles.

My favourite invention

I’m using internet every day for many reasons, and there is a website for everyones interests. That is what I think makes it the best invention, and it is also my favourite. Nowadays it’s so easy so spread information and thoughts over the internet. The revolution in the north of Africa started over Facebook and I think that is a marvellous example of how the internet is good for the society. With just a click on your computer you can tell the world anything you like. Since almost everyone got a computer ore a mobile with internet, it’s easy to read the newspaper over the internet and so on get to know what is happening around the world. In the newspaper the informations is always correct but don’t be to shore when it’s about what is written on Facebook, Twitter or other social websites. Sometimes it’s bad that the texts on social websites is not corrected by anyone. False news can spread quickly without people knowing that they are wrong.

What should I do?

An answer to  a boy who fell in love with his bestfriends sister

In this case you maybe should talk about it with someone that you trust. If not your parents, why don’t you ask someone old that know the troubles of love. You have to think this through, because it’s a big decision. Is your relationship with your friend worth to risk for a love? When you are ready to talk about it with your friend and his sister, I think that you should start with the sister. She has the right to know about your feelings. After that you can decide if you want to share it with your friend, which I suggest. It’s important that you are honest to your friend, but most of all to yourself. If the love is mutual the decision lies in your friends hands. Can he accept the love between his best friend and his sister? If the sister doesn't love you back, you probably should try to forget her. Once again, be careful! To fall in love whit a family member of your friend is a perilous path to take.

Friendship

When I think of a good friend I think of someone who understands me. In a friendship I think it is important that you can be honest and that your friend listens to you and that you listen back. If both of us are speaking the truth it will be so much easier to trust each other.

I like to tell secrets and to talk gossip with my friends, but secrets always find a way of coming out. Therefor I have to trust my friend, and he/she has to trust me back. That is what I think is the basic of a friendship, or any other relationship. But you shouldn't forget to have fun! I want to laugh with my friends, and sometimes laughing with my friends can make me forget bad things in my life. I hope that my friends feel the same, that a good laugh is cheering everyone up.

Something that I feel good about is that if I and my friend are fighting, we will find our way back again. In a really good friedship I think that you maybe fight more than you would do if you weren't so close. What I've been told, is that the people that you fight the most, are the people that you care the most about. Even if I respect my friend I can't give up without a fight if I think that he/she is wrong.

I think it is nice to have many friends because then you can do so much more that if you are just two. But I think that I would feel kind of lonley even if I had maybe ten friends around me. What I really need is someone to talk to, like I said. In every circle of friends that I'm in there is always someone that I like more and that I am closer to. That is what I think would be the best: many people that you care for and have lots of fun with, but there is still one that is your best friend!

Lockie's Diary

Have you ever known how it is to be a dog? Well, I can tell you that it is not a good thing to be. I would never like to be a dog in my next life, if I'm even allowed to get a second. Right now I feel like a big barking dog, without love from its master. With that I mean my mom. She is not happy at all since I've forgotten to put up this sign for my and Egg's meeting for the river. After she baked some disgusting cakes she wanted me to help her so she didn't have to go up on a chair, because she always hurts herself then. But of cource I had planned to meet Dot at the windfarm by then. When I finally got there she didn't show up. All sad and miserable I bicyced home and found Philip, Egg and Mum. I had totally forgotten about the meeting, which had gone really bad with just two visitors, and then I felt so ashamed so I escaped. Or at least it felt like I was escaping. Well, the sea and the waves were as good as they always are because they never ask me anything. When I'am on my surfingboard I'm feeling so free.

But still I have to make up for Mum and Egg, and after that I have the big question about Vicki or Dot left. So, dear diary, I really feel lika a big barking dog! Please help me.
